The Camp is shaded by the Maputaland Coastal Forest covering the ancient dunes that make up the edge of the KwaZulu-Natal coast. With the Marine Reserve just offshore and the beach only a 15-minute stroll away, world-class diving and snorkelling opportunities and other adventures are on your home-from-home door step!

Facilities & Services

  • Swimming pool and deck
  • Game viewing: As the camp is situated within a coastal forest reserve, this is not a traditional terrestrial game viewing area, but birding is excellent while red duiker and reedbuck can be seen on walks. Dolphins can be seen offshore.
  • Turtle Tracking: October to March sees Loggerhead and Leatherback turtles come ashore at night to lay their eggs.
  • Whale watching: June to October produces wonderful sightings of Humpback whales during their annual migration.
  • Cricket, Soccer, Rugby & Volleyball – The camp supplies all the equipment. In the high season big matches are organised amongst Beach Camp guests and staff which is great fun.
  • Further activities at an additional cost include snorkelling at Lala Nek, trips to Lake Sibaya as well as scuba diving, excursions to Black Rock (please note that Black Rock is about 1 hour 30 minutes drive each way from the camp), Horse riding, Sangoma Visits, Zulu Dancing, and Quad Biking.

Please note activity times are flexible and depend largely on the tides and weather and times for walks are arranged at the camp on request.

Rocktail Beach Camp has a central dining room, bar and lounge with large wraparound veranda for dining.

Overview

Rocktail Beach Camp is perfectly suited for families as it boasts a variety of activities for children including walks and excursions specifically tailored to keep young minds occupied and interested.

Looking after younger guests

Beach Camp offers one of the most exclusive beach experiences in South Africa – the perfect spot for children to dig in with buckets, spades and lots of imagination. Parents are able to relax while keeping an eye on their children.

  • Children’s play room adjacent to the pool area where a wide varity of games can be played and arts and crafts take place.
  • Equipment is supplied for Body surfing but children need to be accompanied by their parents.
  • For Children 8 years and older the Dive centre has a Bubble Maker Course. For 1-2 hours children can try out the scuba gear in the large pool.

Supervised activities & babysitting

  • Some activities undertaken by guides to give you and your children a better such as walks to discover small creatures in the rock pools at low tide or Dune Boarding.
  • Babysitting available on request with advance notice and payable locally.

Childrens meals

Families with children may have different dining times if the camp is full. But there’s a great children’s menu with pizza, hamburgers and pasta, just right for a kid’s appetite!

Safety

The lodge is a coastal forest setting and although there are no dangerous large animals, care should be taken to avoid snakes and spiders (or not get too close for those avid bug fans who would see this as a distinct plus!).

Room types

The lodge has a combination of 17 tented rooms including twins and doubles and a special Honeymoon Suite accommodating up to 48 guests. All rooms have en-suite bathrooms with an open feel indoor shower, fans and amenities provided include towels, torch, laundry bag, mosquito coil, soap, shampoo and insect repellent plus safe. Family

7 Family Suites consists of 1 double bed in the master bedroom and 2 x ¾ beds in the second bedroom room with a shared bathroom and accommodate up to 2 adults and 2 children (a 3rd child may be accommodated on a stretcher bed, subject to confirmation on request).

Rates

Rates starts from £110 per person including Dinner, Bed & Breakfast.

Family

Children under 12 sharing a room with parents pay a discounted rate.

Very friendly, family atmosphere – we liked the combination of ‘rustic’ but luxury, isolated location and the facilities for kids – we will go back!
