Jan Harmsgat
This charming guest house, featuring authentic country style, is situated on a historic farm near Swellendam in the Klein Karoo. Well located to break your journey from the Cape to Garden Route, we recommend pre-booking the excellent dinner enjoyed in the atmospheric candle-lit dining room.

Jan Harmsgat has been awarded the Fair Trade in Tourism South Africa Trademark. Please see our Responsible Tourism page under About Us for further information.
Most of the staff have come from the local farm worker community, some with very little if any educational background and in-house training has been offered since the Farm was bought seventeen years ago.
Whilst some of the trainees have remained at the guest house for many years, such as Head Cook Lena, others have gone on to open the Old Gaol Coffee shop at the Museum in Swellendam, which Jan Harmsgat helped establish, and are now shareholders. Bushbaby highly recommends a visit here also!

The room was lovely and the staff friendly and helpufl, but this hotel didn’t really work for us (family with twins age 3) although it would be hard to say exactly why. Perhaps an ‘in town’ location would have helped keen Ben and Chris entertained. We dearly needed a break in the journey though and if this is the only sensible option, then that’s OK.

The new owners took over about a month ago and were very friendly. The separate lodge was lovely (30 seconds walk from the main building). Although there was some temporary building work creating a slight noise problem, there was a complimentary dinner to apologise.

Jan Harsmgat was very peaceful with friendly owners and great food. We would have stayed for a couple of days had we had more time (Bowden family, Jan 09).
